“I took this photo of Lady Gaga the second she walked off stage at the Oscars having won for Best Song. There were a lot of photos of Gaga looking really emotional and happy on the night, but none quite like this. I think this is before there was any composure at all. She came out and it was really pure just off the stage, massive relief. It‘s a crop. The shot originally was wider. I couldn‘t get quite as close as I wanted to get. If I‘d wanted this picture, I would‘ve turned the camera on it‘s side and been a little closer, but it‘s such a better photo for the crop and that‘s why I‘ve gone with it like that. I think what you see in there is absolutely raw, unbridled emotion, relief, pride, but she‘s genuinely overcome. And I think when you see someone at an event like that, showing such raw emotion, it‘s a really rare thing. If I‘d waited for her to compose herself, this picture wouldn‘t exist. When you‘re shooting any situation at which emotions are high, it could be a sporting event where someone‘s going to win, It could be, someone‘s getting an award, someone‘s about to pass their driving test… I mean, whatever the hell it is, there‘s something which is going to make someone feel really emotional. You know, a surprise birthday party. And you‘ve just got to be camera ready and not wait for the moment to pass. Just make sure that what you‘re doing is capturing that moment.”
