“I shot this photo of Awkwafina at the Chateau Marmont hotel in Hollywood. It was taken as part of a commission for Vogue magazine’s awards portfolio in 2020. The real story behind this photo is the first person energy that she’s giving straight into the lens. I’d shot a number of different concepts with her. And this was the very last picture of the shoot. And I got some good photos, but they were missing that extra little sparkle that I try to get in a picture where you feel a real authentic sort of moment between the subject and the lens. And therefore from the subject to the viewer. We’d sort of finished the shoot and she was talking to me and sort of dropped a punchline that went like, aha. And I was like, oh my God, that’s the photo. That’s funny. Just do exactly that to me again. And she literally did it to me once. And the camera I used the Leica Q2, when you take a picture, the image flashes up in the viewfinder for a split second. And so I knew I’d got it. And I take a bit of pride in getting the picture and moving on. And so I never asked her to do it again. I sort of said, does it do that? And she went saw I got it. And that was the end of the shoot. Done. And it was my favorite picture. And then I bumped into her on the red carpet of an awards ceremony a few months later. And she was like, that was the last shot. That was the last shot. So yeah, one of my favorite pictures from that job, from that portfolio.“
