About this picture

“I took this photo of Benicio del Toro, driving a convertible down the L.A River. I love this shot because he, is so effortlessly cool in this photo. He’s kind of driving past me, he’s acknowledging me, but isn’t in any way trying. And I think that’s the sort of recipe for cool is when someone looks amazing and looks like they didn’t try. You’ve really nailed it. His head his kind of framed by the edges of the L.A River. It’s hugely helped by the lights. The light shapes this picture, the sun sort of off up here. And so more than half his face is in shade, but the highlights pick it up really well. And the reflections off the paint job with the car, just make it really feel like a Hollywood image. I shot it on a 28 mil-lens. And I remember, I got him to do a few passes of me and he just kept driving around, turning around, driving past turning around driving. And this was for a cover story for Esquire Magazine in America. I love this and I have a copy of this print on my wall at my studio. Because for me, he’s just the epitome of cool in this picture.”
